Under promise and over deliver

Under promise and over deliver

A manager that I once worked for used to tell us to under promise and over deliver. He wanted us to consistently exceed client expectations rather than meet them or fall short.

You could make things worse if you over manage expectations. Promising very little might make people wonder about your capabilities. Delivering well beyond what you promise may cause people to think you intentionally held back what you could do, especially if this happens regularly.

So what’s the secret? Think about the best case scenario, then consider what could go wrong and back off to a more realistic outcome. Once you’ve committed, do your best to beat expectations while keeping communication open and honest.

What do you do to manage and exceed expectations?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Being too busy is the refuge of the unfulfilled

I was watching an interview with Tony Robbins and he said he always asks people how they would describe what they do, “Is it work, is it career or is it mission?” It got me thinking about how people talk about how busy they are, wearing "being busy" like a...

Options give you freedom

Options give you freedom

One of the keys to resilience is adaptability. Adaptability is a function of the options you have. Take movement as an example: Can you get down to the floor and back up? Can you do it without using your hands? If a fallen tree is blocking your hiking trail, can you...
