Explore your edges

After a grueling workout at the gym last night, I was reminded that my limits become obvious at the edge of my capabilities.

Our challenge was to complete the prescribed workout as quickly as possible. I chose “easier” options than usual to ease my transition back to intense efforts. Ironically, my choices allowed me to keep moving fairly quickly and my heart rate stayed at an uncomfortably high rate.

It took me nearly 7 1/2 minutes to complete the workout and the “easier” option felt anything but that. As I struggled to recover, I realized how much less fit I am compared to a few months ago. If I hadn’t tested my limits, I might be living in ignorant bliss. Instead, I’m painfully aware of how much work I need to do to keep myself healthy.

Exploring my edges has helped me in other areas as well. Writing this blog, having empathy for others, listening and even smiling. Comfort feels good and is sometimes needed. Too much comfort leads to stagnation and decline.
