Discipline
Trish was working on her weekly guest blog and she said she wasn’t feeling it. She switched to another draft she had in progress and still wasn’t feeling it. In the end, she fought through her malaise and got it done.
That’s one of the hallmarks of discipline. You show up and get things done even when you’re not feeling it. Repeat this often and you will accumulate a body of work.
The alternative, using motivation as fuel, is unsustainable. It’s only a matter of time until lack of motivation lets you down. Without a solid foundation of discipline, you might give up.
What do you finish even when you’re not feeling it?
Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Focus on what you want
When you receive critical feedback, it is easy to become defensive. Are you defending what you did because you think the result is as good as it could be…or do you feel the need to explain why you did the wrong thing, even though you agree the outcome...
Letting hobbies go
Back in the 90s, I played volleyball religiously. During the summer, we went to the beach almost every Saturday and Sunday, played all day, then went and played indoors on Sunday night. We also played indoors 1 or 2 nights during the week year-round....
Cheating on your diet
The more I think about it, the more “cheating on your diet” is a strange idea. Are you in a monogamous relationship with your diet? Will your salad forgive you if you decide to have a sandwich? Perhaps we need to rethink this idea. The food you eat sends...
There is more than one truth
I had a funny thought. It was 37 degrees today. No, it was 3 degrees. Actually, both are true, just two different ways of saying the same thing (Fahrenheit vs. Celsius). Sometimes two things that sound totally different are both accurate. For those of us...
Follow thoughtfully and lead responsibly
When I was a kid, I did a lot of dumb things going along with friends or imitating someone I admired. If I had stopped to really think about it, I probably could have made a better decision…but I just went along with whoever was the influence of the...
Has spring unsprung?
My announcement of the arrival of spring in the mountains might have been premature. We have received another six inches of snow. (According to Trish, I might have jinxed us.) The convertible is back in the garage until all the new snow melts, but the...

What do you expect?
Imagine yourself in the future, your dreams fulfilled. Did you get there based on your current habits and choices? If not, think about the choices you would have needed to make. Start with one of those. Make a new choice and take a step in the right direction. When...
Home
There are times that I wonder whether moving to the mountains was a good idea. We’re pretty far from everything and it’s tough developing a business with such a small population. Then there are times when I know for sure we are home. Lake Chocorua has been stunning...
27 Squats to Mobilize Your Hips
Here is a simple drill to improve proprioception in your hips, knees and ankles. (Proprioception is your sense of your body in space.) Test Range of motion (ROM) baseline:* Forward fold with straight legs (touch your toes or the floor)* Hip rotation to each side with...
Poor comparison
One of the things I’ve seen people point out with coronavirus, “It’s not that big a deal. More people die in car accidents every year.” I wonder if they've thought about why automobile deaths are as low as they are. We invest huge amounts of time and money in...
Sleep debt comes with interest
Unless you have a very rare gene, you need 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night to be at your best. Sleeping less than you need accumulates sleep debt. How do you know if you're sleeping enough? You regularly wake up well-rested without an alarm. For the rest of us, keep...
