Embody your values
It’s easy to talk about core values. It’s harder to hold onto them under difficult circumstances. Most of us have made compromises at one time or another. “I don’t agree with that, but I need this job.”
On one hand, we should have empathy for people who do what they need to survive and feed their family. On the other hand, how we behave shows more about our actual values than what we say.
“Your actions speak so loudly, I can not hear what you are saying.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
If you couldn’t explain your behavior, would people understand your values based on your actions?
Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Adversity
Things that come easy are not fulfilling, but quick wins keep you going through the inevitable adversity. You learn more from mistakes and struggles than easy success, but success provides motivation to keep moving forward. The easiest way to keep momentum...
Where are you at?
Trish and I constantly learn new things from a lot of different sources. Each source has their own idea of what is most important, so what are we to do? How do we figure out what will have the biggest impact for our clients? Depending on the source, the...
Change sustainably
A lot of people wish they were a bit slimmer or leaner. This is why there are endless diets, gyms as far as the eye can see and dozens of supplements claiming to be the magic pill you need. Much of the marketing promises fast results. Is this really...
Discomfort
A lot of times, discomfort comes from contrast. It can be agonizing to wade slowly into a cold lake or river, but jumping in is a second of bracing cold, then you feel fine. A "warm day" in the middle of winter would feel positively chilly in the middle of...
Dreams
Have you looked back on the dreams you had as a child? I remember being really into rock music from a young age. Was it because my older siblings were into it or would I have liked it anyway? In middle school, my best friend and I dreamed of being rock...
Peer Pressure
Peer pressure has mostly negative connotations, but it might be underrated as a power for good. “You are the average of the five people with whom you spend the most time." If you want to achieve something, find a friend or group of people looking for the...
Good intentions
Sometimes procrastination pays off. Trish and I decided to tackle a leaky faucet today (leaky spout and handle). Result - we are heading to buy a new faucet tomorrow. Apparently, corrosion had turned our kitchen faucet into a house of cards. Of course we had to deal...
Use probability as a guide
The more options you try, the better your chance of finding the best. It’s unlikely that your initial choice is the one. But at some point, looking further is probably a waste of time. Say you love pizza and move to a new area. You should try a few pizza places before...
Consistency can be good or bad
Consistency can be a great thing. The discipline of doing something every day can keep you moving forward when motivation is low. The benefits are lost when you seek consistency for its own sake. Due to working on a project into the wee hours, I published this blog...
27 Good Mornings
Here is a simple drill to improve proprioception in your hips while firing up your hamstrings. (Proprioception is your sense of your body in space.) Test Range of motion (ROM) baseline: * Forward fold with straight legs (touch your toes or the floor) * Hip rotation to...
This too shall pass
During a recent 21-day meditation challenge, I was asked to reflect on the following parable: There was a king who said to the court sages: "I have a ring with one of the finest diamonds in the world. I want to hide a message under the stone that can be useful in a...
Another try
If you try something that’s supposed to be really good for you and don’t like it, you might need to give it another chance. Maybe you weren’t ready or it wasn’t the right one for you. I tried meditation a couple of different ways and didn’t really notice any benefits....
