Challenging and achievable

Challenging and achievable

We’ve wrapped up another month of our online Movement for Longevity classes. Each person has their own strengths and weaknesses and it takes some trial and error to find what they need. My favorite phrase, “challenging and achievable” describes how to know what’s right for you.

You must challenge yourself as you’re unlikely to make progress if the exercises are easy. On the other hand, progress is unlikely without repeated success. The Goldilocks zone is around 80% success. The successes feel good and reinforce good movement. The occasional failures show that you’re pushing hard enough to expand your comfort zone.

What do you do to push your limits?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Copycat

Copycat

Trish keeps suggesting topics for me to write about, so I suggested she write about them herself. She said she does not want to copy me. Is it so bad to be a copycat? After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In any case, almost everything we...

It’s that time again, the start a month-long SimplyBetter Growth Challenge. April was about marketing, a broad area that allowed me to build momentum. May was focused on recording videos. I am now comfortable on camera and have done a series of FaceBook...

Addition through Subtraction

Addition through Subtraction

It is tempting to keep looking for the one thing you need to do to be happy. Sometimes we would be better off looking for things we can eliminate. To figure out whether you should give something up, compare the downside with the upside. I used to look at...

Technology – Boon or Bane?

Technology – Boon or Bane?

Technology is supposed to make life easier and increase our productivity. Sometimes it seems like more trouble than it’s worth. To celebrate the end of our video challenge, I suggested to Duncan that we do a joint Facebook live. After an hour of wrestling...

Outcome and Process Part 2

Yesterday, I wrote about using a daily process to achieve your goals. If you missed that post, check it out here. To help you figure out how you can apply this to your goals, here are two more examples: Outcome - I am relaxed and happy when I am with my...

Outcome and Process

If you want to increase your chances of achieving your goals, focus on the process not the outcome. Start with the outcome in mind, then think about the behaviors that are likely to lead to that outcome. Some of these behaviors probably build on each...

Risk a no

One of the challenges of building a small business is staying in the minds of your clients. It’s a balance of reminding people you are there to help without coming across as spammy. One hand, I worry that I will bother people so my instinct is to leave them alone. On...

Coast or push

After 2-weeks off from writing, I am back at it. It was nice to take a break after writing nearly every day for 10 months. Even though it's easier than when I started, it still requires effort. Getting back to it was harder than I expected. It’s so much easier to...

An alien world

Sometimes you visit another country that is so different, you instantly know you’re in a completely different culture. The taxi from the airport to our resort was an experience. In addition to your usual bumper to bumper traffic, there were swarms of mopeds weaving in...

Mind-bending time zones

I left Chocorua on Sunday afternoon and arrived in Bali on Tuesday afternoon. A long flight East across many time zones means that my Monday was spent in the air. I’ve done business trips like this. The first time I filled out my expense report I got really confused....

An honest self-assessment

An honest self-assessment

I recently realized that I’m not as good at listening as I previously believed. I was involved in two heated debates over the weekend. Upon reflection, both could have been avoided if I had listened more effectively. I’ve also been interrupting people which is almost...

Surprisingly connected

Even though we are spending more time at home and not seeing our friends at the gym or our local shops, I feel like we’re even more connected than usual. Even though we’re physical distancing, we are even more social. Just this weekend, we had multiple Zoom calls with...
