Experience versus time

Experience versus time

One of the keys to long-term success is knowing when to say no. When you lack experience that you need, saying yes to every opportunity makes sense. The experience you gain is worth more than your time. Being very choosy might prevent you from making progress.

Sooner or later, the balance shifts. You’ve done enough to be considered experienced and it’s no longer sensible to say yes to every opportunity. Your time is now more valuable than experience and every commitment you make leaves you unavailable for something else. Being very choosy might be exactly what you need make progress.

How do you decide when to take every opportunity and when to say no?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Be open

Be open

When you ask someone for help or advice, are you looking for a way to keep doing what you’re doing or are you truly open to change? Sometimes we look for ways to make the same choices, but get different results. To get different results, you usually need...

Take Action

To act consistently enough to make sustainable change, you need desire, willingness and ability: Desire is usually the easy one. Most of us love the idea of being lean, strong, well-organized, etc. If you lack desire to change, hopefully you're satisfied...

A day in the life…(Part 2)

A day in the life…(Part 2)

Yesterday I suggested you do a thought exercise with two parts: The first part was imagining how you spend the day as someone else. I would spend the day as Trish, mostly sketching and painting so I could feel what it’s like to have artistic talent and...

A day in the life…

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be someone else or wished someone would know what it was like to be you? Your thought exercise for today… If you could be someone else for one day (with all their talents, skills, strengths and weaknesses),...

It will only take a minute

It will only take a minute

Getting back to a daily tidying habit is refreshing. It has reminded me of the little things we do (or don’t do) that add up to something bigger. Little things like putting dishes and clothes away before going to bed. "It will only take a minute" can be a good reason...

Seek dissent

If you want to grow, you might want to venture out of your bubble. How do you know if you’re in a bubble? One sign is that you always see and hear opinions that agree with you. It's easy to find information that supports your views, but what if you’re...

Categories can prevent you from finding what you love or help you find what you need. If you love Mexican food, choosing a Mexican restaurant increases the chance of a good experience. On the other hand, if you don’t like a certain genre of music or books, you might...

Can’t vs won’t

Can’t vs won’t

Can’t might be one of the most overused words in our language. The next time you think or say you can’t do something, stop and ask yourself why. You might find out that you mean that you won't. I can’t give up wine. I love the flavors and experience of it. It’s part...

It can be challenging overcoming the momentum of the week. A late football game on Sunday leads to a late start on Monday…Trying to get everything done on Monday leads to another late night…This leads to another late start on Tuesday. Add a snowstorm and you end with...

Can’t versus don’t

When you tell yourself or others that you can’t do something (that tempts you), you're destined to fail. If you are trying to break a daily ice cream habit, saying, “I can’t eat ice cream.” is asking for trouble. You're sending a message of deprivation built on...

Fulfilling beats productive

Fulfilling beats productive

Trish and I killed the day yesterday by sleeping in, having a leisurely breakfast, then going on a long hike with Roli up Whitehorse Ledge and across to Cathedral Ledge. Although we didn’t have much to show for all the time we spent, it was a fulfilling way to spend...

Perfectly unexpected (by Trish)

Perfectly unexpected (by Trish)

Before writing my "How long is a piece of string?" blog post, I jokingly posed that question to Jim. Without batting an eye or missing a beat, he answered, very confidently… with a perfectly, unexpected answer… “As deep as a hole!?" We both got a good laugh as we...
