Hits and misses

Hits and misses

The more shots you take, the more hits you’re likely to get. You’ll also have more misses and it’s a price worth paying. If you try to avoid misses, you take few shots and may end up with fewer hits in the end.

The person who tries to make every attempt perfect doesn’t do much and may not get great results. Those who make lots of attempts continue to learn and are more likely to do great work and approach mastery.

If you are trying to improve a skill or develop your talents, practice frequently and learn from your misses. Even better, put some of your work out there for other people to see and get their feedback.

What skill or talent could you develop further by taking more shots?

PS – Be selective about the work you share. If you take 100 photos to get 10 great ones, share the 10. Most people don’t want to flip through your fail pile. If you write a bunch of drafts to get to something you love, share the final result. Wait until you become famous to share the failed attempts that got you there.

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Come sail away

Come sail away

This post is inspired by a comment on one of my earlier posts. One of my devoted readers lamented the fact that she has not gone sailing because she has not yet learned how to back up the trailer. What a bummer! One of the things I miss about living close...

Can you care too much?

Can you care too much?

As a business owner, can you care too much? When you put so much of your passion, time and effort into your business, it's easy to merge your identity with the business. Is it who you are or is it what you do? If a potential customer decides not to buy, do...

Possibility

Possibility

The less skill you have, the less accurately you tend to judge what’s possible for you. You see someone doing gymnastics, playing guitar or snowboarding and think, “That looks easy. Maybe I could do that.” Then you try to learn the basics and realize it is...

Productivity

“It was a great weekend, but not as productive as I wanted.” Maybe you're not measuring productivity correctly. If you had a great weekend, what you did might have been exactly what you needed. If that's not productive, then what would be?

Don’t be a square

Don’t be a square

A healthy brain means healthy sleep. Healthy sleep means a healthy brain. It’s a circle. This bit of wisdom came from one of the presenters at an Alzheimer's summit. Sometimes it’s that simple. Don’t be a square, get in the circle! If a healthy brain is...

Own your mistakes

Own your mistakes

We all make mistakes. Better to confess and ask forgiveness, than to hide it and hope you don’t get caught. The longer you wait to come forward, the worse it will be. To err is human; to forgive, divine. If the people around you aren’t willing to forgive mistakes,...

Presence over presents

Before I embraced minimalism, I loved receiving gifts. After I realized we have more than we need, gifts lost their appeal. I understand that some people get joy from giving and I appreciate the thought behind gifts. Still, less material gift-giving is more...

A hammer doesn’t make nails

Give a boy a hammer and everything looks like a nail. It’s a trap that could catch any of us. Our brains naturally filter for the tools we acquired most recently. Awareness is the first step towards overcoming our biases. If you find yourself looking for issues that...

Worth the investment (by Trish)

Worth the investment (by Trish)

For the past several years, I’ve been struggling with an outdated laptop that really couldn’t keep up with what I was asking it to do on a daily basis. For various reasons, I just couldn’t justify spending the money to replace it, despite the fact that it caused...

Happy Birthday Roli!

Happy Birthday Roli!

A special day today as we celebrate Roli's 7th birthday. Although approaching middle-age, he is as nutty as ever. He nearly bounces off the walls if stuck in the house too long and plays exuberantly every day. When we adopted him, he was 3 years old and thin as a...
