How long is a piece of string? (by Trish)
As a health coach, I often see people looking for the best diet, the most effective weight loss strategy or a simple and straightforward solution that will fix all that ails them. Contrary to what many infomercials, social media posts and email campaigns might have you believe, there’s no one size fits all, “perfect” answer for everyone.
On the bright side, although there is no silver bullet, there may be several different things that could net positive results. There are general principles and foundational concepts that will benefit most everyone. Whole foods, healthful nutrient-dense ingredients and limited processed chemicals, for instance, are good guidelines to follow for all of us.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that what works for someone else (e.g., ketogenic, paleo, gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, etc.) must be THE right solution for you (or vice versa). Likewise, it can be surprising (and sometimes disappointing) to learn that what used to work for you in the past might not still work now.
Our bodies are unique, complex systems within ever changing environments. It may take some experimentation to figure out what works best for you today. Your lifestyle, health conditions, taste preferences, etc. will inform what you are willing to try and what is practical to carry out in your daily life. Feel free to experiment to find what works for you. If you need help and accountability, I know a health coach who can help you sort it out. 😉
So, tell me… how long is a piece of string?
Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Let it go
I grew up the youngest of five children, got coke-bottle glasses at a young age and had a goofy haircut for most of my life. As a child, I feel like I had more than my fair share of being picked on, beat up or bullied. No doubt I brought some of this on myself, but it...
Misunderstood
It would be amazing to be a dog in a loving home. Sleep whenever you want...meals prepared like clockwork with abundant treats in between...cuddles on demand...walks in the neighborhood, at the lake, in the woods… On the other hand (or paw, in this case), it must be...
Empathy
I am the youngest of five children. Some might say that I was a bit spoiled as a youngster, the baby of the family. Suffice it to say, I was not been known for having a lot of empathy for others, especially when I was younger. How things have changed... In 2013, I...
Values
Back when I worked my first job in financial services, the company made sure that employees understood the company values. I was so embedded in the company that I thought those were my values, too. Luckily for me, my lovely wife Trish challenged me as to whether those...
Risk a no
One of the challenges of building a small business is staying in the minds of your clients. It’s a balance of reminding people you are there to help without coming across as spammy. One hand, I worry that I will bother people so my instinct is to leave them alone. On...
Coast or push
After 2-weeks off from writing, I am back at it. It was nice to take a break after writing nearly every day for 10 months. Even though it's easier than when I started, it still requires effort. Getting back to it was harder than I expected. It’s so much easier to...
