Is it worth debating?
A few years ago, I sometimes commented on political posts. I love to play devil’s advocate so it seemed like a good idea to challenge people’s thinking.
After exchanges with a couple of friends that adversely affected our relationships, I realized it’s not worth it. You can’t rationally discuss emotional topics, so there’s a lot of downside and little upside.
Everyone has their own experiences that led them to their beliefs. If I could go back and do things differently, I would empathize more and ask questions instead of trying to change people’s minds.
What topics do you avoid debating with friends?
Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Thanks
Why do you say thanks, to be polite or something more? When someone holds a door for you, a simple “Thank you” seems appropriate. Trish often makes breakfast or dinner for both of us; I say “thanks,” but is that enough or does it become empty because I say it every...
What if…
Often when something bad happens to us, we wonder if we could have done something differently. Maybe, but how do we know whether that would turn out better in the end? Things that are bad in the short term might be great on the long term. I remember doing poorly on my...
Sometimes you get lucky
Back when I lived in London, I took my last Siberian Husky, Silverbear everywhere I could. He was a regular at The Old White Bear, the greatest pub we could have asked for, until it tragically closed due to developer greed. He also frequently joined me at CrossFit...
Are you enough?
One of my favorite sports movies of all time is Cool Runnings, the story of the Jamaican bobsled team. It is such a great story about athletes who wanted to go to the Olympics so badly that they found a (very unlikely) way. There is so much inspiration in the movie;...
Magnesium oil
I use just a few supplements and magnesium oil is at the top of my list. If you ever suffer muscle spasms, it might be just what you need. When a muscle is twitching or starts to spasm, I spray some magnesium oil on it. Within a few minutes, my muscle relaxes and the...
What can you do?
It’s easy to focus on the things we can't do. It’s more useful to recognize our limits and do what we can. The more you focus on what you can’t do, the more likely you'll be stuck where you are. Can you identify one thing that will move you forward? Do that every time...
