Time suckage

Time suckage

Working on our website recently made me realize that technology can be like a time machine. I sit down to change a few things, then time seems to go by in a blink and I have accomplished little if anything.

In a few sessions, I learned a bunch of things, but made no real changes to the site. Other days, I made format updates and wondered how it could have taken so long.

Thankfully, web site maintenance is not my full-time job. I love great looking websites, but not sure I have the patience to do this as more than a side hobby.

Which tasks or hobbies of yours cause time to disappear?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Do what you want or what people expect?

Do we sometimes go with the momentum of people’s expectations, because it is easier than trying to explain why we have changed? Back when I delivered newspapers as a kid, I got in the habit of stopping at the local convenience store for an Orange Crush and...

Improve instead of optimize

Improve instead of optimize

I previously wrote about the downside of optimizing. If you still want to optimize something, first make sure you have the basics covered. If your car has a flat tire, switching to high octane fuel is probably not going to help much. Struggle to run a...

Can’t vs won’t

Can’t vs won’t

Can’t might be one of the most overused words in our language. The next time you think or say you can’t do something, stop and ask yourself why. You might find out that you mean that you won't. I can’t give up wine. I love the flavors and experience of it. It’s part...
