We’ve always done it this way
Sometimes when questioned why you do something, the response is, “We’ve always done it this way.” That might be true, but is it the best way? This came up frequently in my prior career as an internal auditor. Of course, it’s easier to apply this thinking to someone else than yourself.
Trish and I were discussing household chores and I realized that most of the division of chores is the same it’s been for years. Mostly this is because we’ve always done it this way. I wonder what would happen if we hit reset and started over.
Maybe we should list out all the chores and alternate picking the ones we want to do. Eventually they will all be selected and we each will have some we don’t mind and some we’d rather not have. What could be more fair than that?
How often do you question how you do things and find a better way?
Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

New Year’s Resolutions
It is approaching that time again, another year is nearly over and we prepare to begin anew. Along with this, many people are engaged in the ritual of New Year’s resolutions. Should you be thinking about a resolution? Like all of the important questions, it depends....
Here we go…
I cannot remember how many times I considered starting a blog or how long I have been thinking about it. It has always been a bit scary to think about putting your thoughts out there for the world to see, even if most of the world does not care to look. It is a little...
Disappointment
Excuses Outweigh On-time Deliverables More Disappointment It might seem silly to write a Haiku when someone fails to deliver on time. Compared to my previous approach of ranting and raving, this seems quite healthy. How do you deal with disappointment? PS...
You first
It's easier to respond to someone else’s idea than to share your ideas first. Going first is taking a risk. What if my idea is bad or sounds stupid? Going first is taking a risk, but it also has benefits. The person who goes first anchors the discussion....
Nature or Nurture
If something “runs in your family,” how much is genetics and how much is what you learned from them? Type 2 diabetes runs in my family. Considering it’s a lifestyle disease, how much is influenced by genetics? It’s impossible to know. Maybe the primary...
Mobilize your feet
Each of our feet has 26 bones, 33 joints, more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments and fascia wrapped around it. Feet are meant to be mobile, not trapped in shoes. Use the drill below to give your feet some love and reclaim some movement. The before...
Help create joy
Thursday was a busy day and Roli got a bit less exercise than usual. On Friday, I woke up to below zero temperatures and decided to compensate Roli for his Thursday patience. Despite the brutal cold, I took him to the lake for a morning jaunt in the snow. At one...
The longest season
The amazing lifestyle we have in the mountains comes with a price. Although each of the four seasons is of equal length, winter feels longer than the others. Cold weather and snow often come in mid-autumn, making it feel like winter. Early spring snow is also common...
